I knew when I tried my first yoga class in Dallas in 2001, it was something special. What I didn’t realize at the time was the impact it would have on my life, and I’m still realizing it. When I returned to Birmingham in 2004, I was fortunate enough to work at a company with a nice gym AND a yoga instructor.
I did my first teacher training in 2006 and started to do some teaching. I was blessed with the opportunity to live in various parts of the country (Ohio, California, Florida and Texas) so I attended yoga studios everywhere I could. In 2016 while living in California, I completed my 200 hour YTT (yoga teacher training) at Yoga Shakti. Since then I have attended some intense yoga and meditation workshops and retreats.
Yoga and breath work have carried me through some dark, sad and stressful days. When I move my body with my breath, I have a deeper connection to God and continuously thank our Creator for the ability to practice yoga and deal with “the human condition.” It’s just one tool in the toolbox of managing real life. Yoga also carries me on a daily basis on the very best of days.
I’ve had a dream to open a studio and share yoga and meditation with others for about ten years. I always knew that Trussville (my home town) would be a perfect location. However, the timing wasn’t right until now. Late in 2022, I knew it was time to move back to Alabama after 15 years. I accepted a job in Alabama, and Trussville Yoga was born. God knows our plans.
I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to practice and grow with you. Trussville Yoga will be a place for friendship, safety, vulnerability, compassion and learning. There are classes for everyone and every skill level (even if you have never tried it). Join us for a wonderful adventure in movement and breathing. I will meet you on the mat just where you are in life!

200-RYT Training, Birmingham Yoga Lab
Helen’s yoga journey began in 2019 as a weekly girls night outing. What started as a social activity soon turned into a journey of self discovery, inner healing and a deep desire to peel back the layers and know oneself fully. After years of daily practice, Helen received her 200-RYT Certification through YogaLab, Birmingham under Pilar Taylor, Shannon Brasovan and Haley Duggan, and is completing a 30-HR Katonah Yoga Mentorship under the guidance of Kat Yates in fall 2024.
Helen approaches her classes through the lens of The Five Element Theory of Chinese Medicine, looking to nature’s seasonal cycle for wisdom and inspiration. With the belief that we are an intricate part of Great Nature, Helen’s classes are designed to help us find harmony, balance and stability in each of life’s seasons through embodied movement, pranayama and mindfulness. In conjunction with the use of the imagination, metaphors and visualization, you can expect to leave class feeling connected and attuned to your external and internal environments.

Sara Marie Persons has been teaching yoga for about eight years, and has explored a variety of styles and mentors. Her foundational 200 YTT training was in power yoga, a blend of modern vinyasa and ashtanga. Sara practices and has taught breathwork and meditation in addition to yogasana classes, and before moving to Alabama, ran her own donation based studio in New York City for two years. Yogic philosophy, spiritual clarity, and inner transformation are always the goals of Sara’s personal practice as well as her classes. Her style of teaching is calm, slow, challenging and curious.

In 2012, I stumbled upon yoga by happenstance. I was recovering from a bad ankle injury and someone suggested hot yoga for therapy. My first foray into yoga was Bikram hot yoga with Stephen Fletcher at the Yoga Circle. What an introduction into the beautiful world of mind-body interaction. Practicing yoga then became a regular thing for me.
Like many others, I took my practice to the Yogalab when Pilar Taylor opened in 2019. Then the pandemic hit forcing us to practice on our own. I continued to do so through online programs and developing my own style.
This was the beginning of a major shift in my life and with the great influence of Pilar, Teresa Callahan, Hailey Dugan and Kat Yates, I received my RYT200 certification in February 2022. Since then I have continued to learn, completing an 8 hour Yin mentorship in the spring of 2023, and a 30 hour Katonah mentorship this past fall (both under Kat Yates).
I approach my classes being influenced by what I’ve learned from my teachers; the creativity of vinyasa flow; the breath and meditation aspects of Yin; and deliberate functionality of Katonah and melding all those styles.

200 HR CYT, YogaRenew
200 HR RYT Yoga Alliance
Kayla’s love of movement started from a very young age when she was introduced to the world of dance. Practicing a variety of different dance styles most of her life from contemporary to belly dancing, she fell in love with the art of movement. In her 30s, she discovered a Yoga & Dance studio in New York and started taking dance classes virtually. Her dance teacher then introduced her to the world of yoga and ashtanga, and the rest is history. Being a librarian herself, her first thought was to bring yoga to libraries which is exactly what she did and continues to teach at local libraries whenever she gets the opportunity. Kayla prides herself on two things when it comes to teaching yoga: 1. Making it fun and accessible for everyone and 2. Prioritizing students’ mental health. Kayla’s goal when you leave her class is to make you feel happy and maybe forget about the world around you for just a little bit. When she’s not teaching, you will usually find her dressed as a princess at your local library (not kidding, she’s a children’s librarian) or getting coffee with her son.
